We had the privilege to explore Awana Kijal by Resort World Genting and tour around Terengganu with a group of bloggers, special thanks to Nuffnang Malaysia. The purpose was to experience a getaway in Terengganu while exploring the popular tourist attraction in the heart of Terengganu.

After settling in the resort, our first itinerary was to head out on a boat ride for firefly sighting after dinner in the resort.
While on the way in the bus to our destination, Mr. Tour Guide brief us on some of the details and what to expect while we’re on the boat to watch Firefly, in Bahasa Malaysia firefly is known as “kelip-kelip”. For Firefly sighting per adult cost RM 50 while children aged 4 to 12 for RM 25.
Firefly light up to find mates generally, they gather at particular trees to find mate as well. Our tour guide explained it’s like their “hang out place”.
As we arrive, we’re divided into two boats to watch firefly in Sungai Yah Yah. The scene and environment was great. However, cameras with flash are not allowed this is so the flash lights do not harm the firefly. It was about a 30 minutes boat ride enjoying firefly. It was really beautiful. Besides lots of firefly we get to see beautiful stars flooded on the sky. It’s been ages since I’ve spotted a star, not to say, the entire sky filled with stars. It’s just so pretty and amazing. The firefly was just moderate as explained by our guide as it depends on season (month). Nevertheless, for my first firefly sighting experience, it’s beautiful, they even fly near to you and around you!
With Jess. Happy faces after looking at beautiful firefly “dating”. ;)PS: You are not allow to apply any insect repellent when visiting Firefly sighting as…the strong scent of insect repellent will keep the firefly away! ;)On our second day, we headed out for our kampung tour journey.
First stop was the Turtle Sanctuary.
We get to see some turtles here. Not literately by the beach but these turtles are kept under the care of Turtle Sanctuary.
We were shared with many insights on how the turtles lay eggs and it’s sad to find out the turtles no longer come to the shores of Malaysia beach due to pollution and humans disturbing them when these female turtles are laying eggs. It’s also said to be dangerous to the female turtles they are laying eggs and people came with flashing cameras and making noises. So sad, I wasn’t able to witness this as years ago the Tourism Malaysia had organized trips to watch the turtle lay eggs. However, now they had been less of them around Malaysia.
So here’s the process in the gallery of Turtle Sanctuary.
Next stop on our way to Mengkuang handicraft center.
We get to witness how it’s made.
Lovely bangs, purse, baskets and floor mats.
So we did some shopping here and I’ve got my clutch. Pretty isn’t it? Love the colour combination, purple and turquoise, my favourie colours.
Just on more stop before lunch. We went to batik gallery. You can buy some of the paintings.
Or opt to do your own at RM 10 per piece. Like how we bring out our creativity to paint a master piece. Just like primary school how we had art classes. 🙂
It was fun and the end result is really satisfying just a disadvantage is some of the colours were mixed up and we didn’t have enough time to colour it so it became too rush.
We then proceed on with Lunch at Tong Juan Seafood which is well known for its speciality Stuffed Crabs.

Then we also went on for some Keropok shopping.
And more Keropok shopping on our 3rd day which was also our last day.
I’ve bought some Keropok Lekor, freshly fried on the spot. 5 pieces for RM 2 only at Kedai Keropok dan Hasil Laut Kak Lah (Foursquare location).
We wouldn’t be able to visit so many places without a guide or transport. The Kampung Tour is certainly worth it and a good experience being able to see Trengganu on a better view.
For more information about Kampung Tour, you may contact Awana Kijal Resort as guest in the resort you can register with them for Firefly Sighting and/or Kampung Tour around Kemaman, Terengganu at the counter in the lobby.

Hi Kelly, apologies for the delay in response. I can’t give you a direct instruction on how to get to the Keropok place. It’s quite a distance for sure and preferably you are driving to Holiday Villa Cherating. But the last time I stayed at Holiday Villa Cherating, it’s rather near to Kemanan, where the famous kopitiam is (about 30minns drive still).
