First Sight of Sandakan

Shannon Chow · August 1, 2011 · 6 Comments

First day of August marks my first visit to Sandakan, Sabah; during the Familiarize media trip (FAM) organised by Sabah Tourism Board in conjunction with Firefly inaugural flight on the 1st of August. It was quite a long flight  which was 3 hours from take off to touch down while throughout the flight during the first day of Ramahdan I was seated beside a young Muslim mother carrying her baby he was adorable while at the back there was an old lady constantly screaming in pain for a few times as she was aged and has slight painful issues when she’s about to urine to the tube, screaming in pain while other concern passengers stretch their body to take a peak of what was happening.
Warm welcome and good wishes, fortune and helath greeted with humble appreciation from Sabah Tourism Board; each of us were given this Vinusak which is bead necklace handmade by the Rungus women of the longhouses of Kudat. Vinusak are young buds of flowers. A symbol of life.
On the first night we stayed in Sabah Hotel it’s one of the largest hotel in Sandakan plus it’s the only hotel with swimming pool in town!
Took a cab headed to town and started hunting for some unique pieces.
Shopping and found a colour tank top and some bangles each for about RM 5? totally worth it as in KL most probably cost about RM 20 each. I just Love em especially the lace bangle!
Enjoy sunset by my hotel room at the window after a relaxing bath chilling on the bathtub.
Night time after meeting up with a lovely aunty she brought me to 7 Haven for yogurt ice cream and it ends the day well. What a great Monday a start of August.

Tomorrow journey will be long and adventerous as we will be heading to the Orang Utan Rehabilitation Center, Gomantong Cave and Sukau river while we’ll be staying in Swiss Inn tomorrow night.

Day 3 will be going to the Rainforest Discovery Center, stop by for lunch at English Tea House & Restaurant and city tour exploring the various landmarks of Sandakan like Agnes Keith House, Central Market on Keuh Teow and Cow Shit Tart, visit to the Puh Jih Syh Buddhist Temple and historical War Memorial Park before coming back to KL Wednesday late night!

Comparing towns, Sibu should be nicer, right? Food too…but can’t  beat Sandakan’s seafood -cheap, fresh and so very nice. Don’t miss that…and I love the English Tea House.
