Innovation is beyond developing new ideas to improve lives, it changes and helps a country or economy develops – to move forward together.
Talk is cheap, innovators take action and they create! – @_MarkGallagher #WIFKL2013
Recently I had the opportunity to attend World Innovation Forum 2013 (WIF-KL) thanks to Socialite Malaysia and YIM. This is my second time attending, last year I had the privilege to be a youth panel speaker along with inspiring youths in Malaysia, this year I had the opportunity to attend as Delegates.

WIF-KL seeks to create a new culture of innovation. Themed “The Future We Desire”, WIF-KL 2013 aims to provide a global platform to deliberate on all aspect of innovation and laying foundation in moving towards a desired future. The event is organised by Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and Malaysian Innovation Foundation/Yayasan Innovasi Malaysia (YIM).
The annual event WIF-KL had benefited myself and others in many ways. I’ve got the opportunity to network with various delegates, ideas shared by speakers and discussions during plenary session had got me thinking. Questions like what can we do, to change or simplify things around us, to improve it’s quality and increase efficiency? Other thoughts involve, how can we begin to prepare ourself for the future.
Some quotes from WIF-KL 2013 which was meaningful to me are as follows:
“See different, be different – a paradigm shift which change thinking & behavior” – Dr. Rashid
“Any project have 2 creation – vision (mental creation) & mission (physical creation) = success” – Dr.Rashid
“If you have an innovative idea, share it on @kickstarter someone may fund it!” – @mark_lankester
“Youths who start & change, can use social media & other innovative tech to start small scale change from your backyard.” – Runo
“Growing change upwards starting from youths” – Runo
“Innovation sustainability really allows more for less” – @mark_lankester
“Examinations need to focus on the Internet and collaboration for problem solving and decision making.” – Prof Mitra – RT from @hyder_yutim
“Everyone should have a Dream” – Datuk Danny Ooi
“Simplicity in innovation and it’s proliferation is key for the Rise of Asia” – Mr Rahul Gupta – RT from @adityaaima10
We had the opportunity to hear about F1 innovation shared by Mark Gallagher, on it’s 3 second pitstop and F1 crash technology rather than using airbags. Personally, with the amount of accidents in Malaysia, I hope the technology will be implemented by car manufacturers, as this will certainly save many lives. Currently, they are still experimenting in Europe.
Apart from the talks and discussion, other attractions at WIF-KL would be the exhibitions.
Propeller, Flexiroam (roaming), Jernih (portable water filter for disaster camps/emergency) and more such as the pizza vending machine and satay stall. The exhibition is a great place to explore by youths and there were also school children on field trips visiting which I find, a great initiative by the school.
Then, I got attracted by the kids surrounding “Just Like It” as they were in the making of nitrogen ice creams. Looking at the curious kids and their hands reaching out to grab the smoke, suddenly it reminds me of learning outside of the classroom.
The interesting bit, never stop till the end of WIF-KL. I had a media pack, which turns out to be more than just a recycle bag! It’s material of the bag itself are made from recycle magazines, while the bag itself is actually multipurpose, by removing a few strings one can open up. It’s purpose; for plants (yes planting in the various pockets), store stationary or toiletries. Indeed very creative by Biji-Biji and made by young adults at GOLD Foundation.
In conjunction with WIF-KL, the YIM Ideation Grand Finale Competition had selected 14 finalist from 100 participating schools nationwide. One group out of the 14 will be crowned overall Champion of the YIM Ideation Competition @ School Club Innovation Toolkit. There’s also awards for Best Grassroots Innovator (Youth) for Male and Female who will each receive RM10K cash prize respectively. The YIM Ideation programme aims to nurture the inventive side of students turning them into innovative inventors and actively develop under the “School Club Innovation Toolkit 2013” an inclusive innovation program by MOSTI. Many other on ground activities during WIF-KL had gather Malaysian as well as international delegates, to bring out the creativity within them to be future innovators.
